The Wiggles break the fourth wall on The Project in awkward live TV blunder

The Wiggles make a very awkward live TV blunder on The Project before jokingly introducing viewers to their ‘new band member’

They recently announced a mammoth tour across Australia next year, to celebrate 30 years of being the world’s most popular children’s entertainment group.

But as The Wiggles discussed the tour on Tuesday’s episode of The Project, the band suffered a hilarious on-air blunder – as they accidentally broke the ‘fourth wall’ and unveiled an unwitting staff member stood on a ladder to the nation.

The blunder happened as the band began performing their hit song ‘Toot Toot’ as they rode off-screen in a pretend red car – before joking that the legs were a new band member, ‘Captain Ladder’, to cover up the funny mishap.

‘I think we’ve just broken the fourth wall, that’s not how this was meant to go!’ host Waheed Aly laughed as the legs appeared on-screen.

‘A new character, Captain Ladder!’ Peter Helliar added.

The ‘fourth wall’ refers to the performance convention in which an invisible, imagined wall separates actors from the audience.

Despite the hiccup, the band – whose current line-up consists of Lachlan Gillespie, Emma Watkins, Anthony Field and Simon Pryce – also revealed they ‘can’t wait’ to return to perform on-stage for a string of dates next year.

‘All of us around the country that are entertainers, we have been waiting for the moment to be able to get the green light to go out and do what we do – which is perform, play music and sing for our audiences,’ said Blue Wiggle Anthony.

‘We’re not alone in that we can’t wait to go out and perform.’

The band have had a number of line-up changes over the years – and have also enjoyed romances within the group.
