Tom Cruise, 58, clings onto the front of a train while filming stunt scene

His ‘girlfriend’ Hayley Atwell was pictured filming a train stunt earlier in the day.

But never to be outdone when it comes to being the action hero, Tom Cruise was pictured clinging on to the front of a steam train while filming for Mission: Impossible 7 in North York on Wednesday.

The actor, 58, looked impossibly dapper in a navy suit and tie, which he wore with a crisp white shirt while filming the no doubt death-defying scene on the moving train.

As the train sped along the track, a moving camera vehicle could be seen driving alongside – just metres away from Tom – as they shot the moment up close.

Tom looked typically clean cut for the scene, as he sported a freshly-shaved face and a neat hair cut.

The backdrop for the shoot was the rolling Yorkshire Moors, where the film has been based for the last week, despite claims the spy franchise had already completed filming.

Earlier in the day, rumoured couple Tom and Hayley cut sombre figures as they stepped out onto set together.

Tom and Agent Carter star, 39, appeared frosty as they walked alongside director Christopher McQuarrie and other crew members but did not seem to talk to each other while making their way to film on the North Yorkshire Moors railway.

Their outing comes four months after romance rumours began, with sources saying at the time that filming ‘brought them closer’.

TOM’S CRAZIEST STUNTS

CLIMBING THE BURJ KHALIFA – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL

Tom’s decision to climb the iconic building sent shock waves around the globe at the time of filming due to the fact the same effect could easily be achieved by using CGI.

During the film Tom can be seen scaling, running on the side of, hanging onto, and smashing through a window of the enormous building in Dubai.

The project took several pro climbers, stuntmen,  architects, and engineers to complete. As well as insisting on completing his own stunt, he also actually for a quick snap at the top without a harness, naturally.

DANGLING FROM A PLANE – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION

To shoot this incredible scene, Tom was strapped to the outside of an airbus aircraft, which had to take off and land before the perfect take was achieved.

If anything went wrong during the shoot he was unable to get back into the plane until it landed again. After filming the scene, he recalled how a small pebble nearly shattered his rib due to the speed of the plane.

HOLDING HIS BREATH – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION

During the fifth Mission Impossible film Tom managed to hold his breath for an incredible six and a half minutes while swimming under water. The average human can hold theirs for just 30 seconds.

The star was taught how to slow his breathing and heart rate so he would require less oxygen to survive.

During an appearance on Graham Norton in 2016, he said: ‘There’d be times I’d be sitting there in meetings and I wouldn’t breathe. I realized I am not breathing, and I had to turn my autonomic system back on to breathe again.’

HIGH SPEED HELICOPTER CHASE – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT

During the sixth installment of the franchise, Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt falls out of a moving helicopter while chasing down August Walker [Henry Cavill] in another helicopter.

The intense chase is action-packed with sophisticated and dangerous maneuvers performed by Tom as he flew the aircraft over the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

KNIFE MILLIMETRES FROM HIS EYE – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2

While this stunt may appear small scale compared to Tom’s typically high-octane scenes, director John Woo wanted the knife fight to appear as authentic as possible so Dougray Scott was asked to try and actually stab Tom in the eye.

Although safety precautions were in place and the knife was kept a quarter inch from his eye at all times, one wrong move from either of the actors could have left Tom seriously injured.

Despite the apparent frosty nature of their stroll to set, Hayley was seen giving Tom a run for his money as she practised stunts on a diesel train before going on to perform them while being shot by a camera crew.

The actress was in a safety harness as she prepared for her latest scenes, which saw her try and move from one carriage to another on the outside of the train.

While she was safely strapped into place during rehearsals, Hayley was seen holding onto the carriage door and gangway at the end of the coach for leverage.

Hayley made sure to adhere to strict Covid-19 protocols on set while she rehearsed, keeping her mask on at all times while the cameras were not rolling.

Hayley was seen wearing a cropped grey hoodie over an open-collared white shirt that she teamed with sleet grey trousers for the shoot.

Her brunette locks were swept back into a tight ponytail and she wore a light palette of make-up for filming, while she stepped out in grey ankle boots.

Tom, meanwhile, looked dapper in a dark blue padded jacket that he wore over sleek suit trousers that he teamed with a pair of smart black shoes that had lifts in them.

Later on in the day, Tom was seen taking socially distanced photos with fans who were waiting outside Levisham station in the hopes of meeting him.

The actor made sure to keep a safe distance apart from the members of the public and kept his mask on and his hands clasped by his sides for the pictures.

Tom was friendly as he spoke to the fans, telling them the location was a ‘lovely place’ and joking around about how cold it was while filming.

Tom and Hayley star opposite Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson in the movie where the plot for the latest adventure of Tom’s character Ethan Hunt has been kept firmly under wraps.

The outing is the first for the duo since it was claimed that filming brought them ‘even closer’, as they are said to have become ‘fairly inseparable’ after they ‘hit it off from day one’.

The new ‘couple’ were spotted standing on scaffolding beside a train, which they appeared using to be shooting a scene together.

Tom hasn’t had a high-profile romance since his divorce from ex-wife Katie Holmes, whom he split from in 2012  and shares daughter Suri, 15.

Prior to this, Tom was married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001. After their split, he retained custody of their two adopted children Connor, 26, and Isabella, 28, who had been raised in the Church of Scientology.

Meanwhile Hayley is said to have split from her English doctor ex earlier this year.

A source told The Sun back in December: ‘Tom and Hayley hit it off from day one.

‘Lockdown, and all the difficulties that came with it, brought them even closer and they’ve become fairly inseparable.

‘They’ve been meeting up after hours, and she’s been to his London pad. They get on brilliantly, and both seem very happy.’

MailOnline contacted both Tom and Hayley’s representatives for comment at the time.

Mission: Impossible 7 is scheduled to be released later this year.

It was claimed in February that location filming on Mission: Impossible 7 had wrapped after a marathon global schedule interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, Christopher McQuarrie posted that production had finished in Abu Dhabi and he was heading ‘back to London for a few finishing touches.’

The delays due to the pandemic, however, mean that Tom’s plan to go straight into filming an eighth Mission: Impossible movie have had to be shelved, Deadline.com reported.

Filming on Mission: Impossible 7 was supposed to start in Italy in February 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it until July 2020.

Filming began in the UK, moved to Norway and then back to Italy where it ground to a halt once again after 12 crew members tested positive for the coronavirus.
