  • WARNING: SPOILERS
  • Unforgotten came to an emotional end last with the death of a major character
  • Viewers were left reeling at the unexpectedly heartfelt series finale
  • Crime at the centre of the drama was also tied up – and the murderer revealed

Unforgotten viewers were left ‘sobbing’ after last night’s series finale that saw DCI Cassie Stuart lose her fight for life after a car crash.

Like the character’s family, fans of the ITV crime drama said an emotional farewell to the police detective (played by Nicola Walker) who had been at the heart of the action for all four series.

The final moments saw DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) deliver a moving eulogy to his ‘mentor and friend’ and devastated father Martin Hughes (Peter Egan) weep freely as he listened to his daughter’s last voicemail on repeat.

‘Torn to pieces,’ one Twitter user wrote. ‘What heartbreaking TV.’

The departure prompted fans and critics alike to question whether this might be the final series of Chris Lang’s cold-case thriller.

Some argued it would be ‘impossible’ for it to continue without the lovably grumpy DCI Stuart, but others campaigned for her partner DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) to take over as lead.

Emotional fans took to Twitter to share their devastation following her death, with many bidding farewell to ‘TV’s best detective drama’.

However others urged show creators to continue Unforgotten with Bhaskar as the lead, hailing his finale performance ‘amazing’.

One tweeted: ‘So sad to see Cass go, but I’m absolutely here for more series with Sunny and the gang, I hope that’s the news being referred to! #Unforgotten #Unforgotten4.’

Another posted: ‘End of an era. Nearly 400 actors over 4 superb seasons. An absolute joy of a job to do, and consistently stellar performances from everybody. #Unforgotten.’

At the same time the case at the centre of this series was tied up, with Deano finally revealed as the murderer.
