Universal to stream The Hunt, The Invisible Man, and Emma… after 109 cinemas close due to COVID-19

Universal Pictures will start streaming The Hunt and a few other of their newly-released movies this Friday on-demand for around $19.99 after 109 cinemas closed nationwide due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape,’ NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in a statement – according to Deadline.

‘We wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable.’

Craig Zobel’s action thriller depicting ‘elites’ killing ‘deplorables’ for sport has had an unlucky, rocky release first because of the Dayton and El Paso mass shootings back in August.

At the time, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to denounce the satirical thriller starring Hilary Swank, Betty Gilpin, Justin Hartley, and Emma Roberts.

The $14M-budget flick has only earned $6.5M back at the box office, and it currently holds a dismal 54% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Universal will also give social distancers a chance to watch Leigh Whannell’s remake of The Invisible Man, starring Elisabeth Moss, which has amassed $122.7M and scored a 91% Rotten Tomatoes rating. 

Home audiences will also get to binge Autumn de Wilde’s big-screen adaptation of based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma starring Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular matchmaker Emma Woodhouse.

The Focus Features period rom-com has only earned $25.1M at the box office despite scoring an 85% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

And beginning this Tuesday – families living in Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand can watch Frozen 2 on Disney+ three months ahead of early.

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic weekend box office dropped to a 22-year low of $55.3M over the past weekend, according to Deadline.
