Watch What Happens Live: Catherine Zeta-Jones calls herself ‘huge royalist’ on Bravo talk show

Catherine Zeta-Jones called herself a ‘huge royalist’ who got gussied up for royal events on Tuesday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live.

The 44-year-old actress hails from Swansea, Wales, and had regularly met Queen Elizabeth when she was starting her career on the stage.

Catherine said she encountered the Queen several times while acting in the Royal Variety Performance show at the Theatre Royal at Drury Lane in London.

‘I did the classic ”lined-up backstage, and then she goes down the line and is able to ask you a question, each and every one of us” …and it makes you feel incredibly, incredibly important,’ the Chicago star remembered. ‘I’m a huge royalist, you know. I get dressed up for the weddings and the births and the christenings. So I’m a huge Queen fan, I mean royal fan.’

The Welsh actress has been honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and previously admitted to watching the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a ball gown alongside husband Michael Douglas, 76, her two children, and cardboard cutouts of Harry, Meghan and the Queen.

She appeared on the Bravo talk show to promote the release of her spring women’s ready-to-wear collection, Casa Zeta Jones.

Catherine wore a lacy look from her own collection, and said it was one of her favorites because she collected old Italian and Spanish lace mantillas, or veils.

The show’s other guest, Diane von Furstenberg, 74, was also wearing one of her own creations.

She, too, had met Queen Elizabeth, encountering her at the wedding of her daughter-in-law Alexandra’s sister Marie-Chantal Miller, now Princess Marie Chantal of Greece.

The Queen had been sitting very close to Diane’s son, Prince Alexander von Furstenberg, which prompted the designer to do something she called ‘completely rude.’

‘I actually took a picture of them, and I don’t think I was supposed to do that,’ she confessed.

Show host Andy Cohen, 52, then asked his guests to talk about other legends they’d met.

Catherine said she’d run into the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury ‘many, many times,’ explaining that he’d used to come see her in the musical 42nd Street every two-and-a-half-months because he loved tap dancing.

‘He used to sit in the royal box and come backstage and say hi,’ Catherine recalled, noting that Freddie had wished her luck when she expressed a wish to act in the U.S., and added, ‘Just keep your head on your shoulders.’

‘Have either of you met Liberace?’ Andy asked, and Catherine smiled remembering that Michael played Liberace in Behind The Candelabra, and noting that she had slept with ‘Liberace.’

Andy jokingly pointed out that she was probably the only woman who had.

Asked if she’d ever met a prince, Diane said, ‘Well I married one,’ referring to her ex, Egon von Furstenberg, a member of the German aristocratic family.

Diane then said she’d known Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis ‘well,’ revealing that the two of them were neighbors on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

‘She was a working woman at that time, she was working for Doubleday and very proud to be an editor, and she had two children, and I had two children, and I too was a businesswoman,’ Diane recalled. ‘She was my idol. I think she is extraordinary. She was so elegant, she was a wonderful mother, and then later, I remember I had dinner with her and Onassis and my ex-husband, and he wasn’t nice to her. And I didn’t like that.’

In a speed-round of questions, Catherine revealed that she thought Chicago was her best film, and said actors Anthony Hopkins and Alfred Molina helped her career most early on, but wouldn’t admit who her best screen kiss was as husband Michael was ‘next door.’

She admitted that she found the little chores Michael did each day such as making the  the bed and taking out the trash incredibly romantic.

Diane was asked about a photo of herself in a green bathing suit that she’d posted online last month, which got a big response.

Next to it, she’d written, ‘Am I crazy to post this? Own your age…. It’s proof you have lived!’

‘It was my birthday, and I had gone for a long swim,’ Diane remembered. ‘My hair was wet, and I just took a selfie… before I knew, it was all over and then I thought I should pull it back but then I thought it would be worse, so here we are. I turned 74, so you’d better own it. And truly, I’ve lived so fully that I should really be 150. I don’t think I would look good in that at 150.’

Furstenberg’s new book, Own It: The Secret to Life, is coming out on March 8, International Women’s Day, which prompted Andy to ask who inspired her.

‘So many women inspire me, and a lot of them are not well-known,’ Diane said. ‘Most women inspire me, because I have yet to meet a woman who is not strong.’
