On a roll: YouTuber spends his time in lockdown creating a complex TOILET ROLL course which dispenses soap

  • Mathieu Carillat, from France, created the toilet paper course over 10 days
  • The Youtuber, Kaplamino, has posted numerous videos since the first one in 2011
  • His chain reaction courses usually involve dominoes or fidget spinners

Youtube star Kaplamino, known for his complicated and inventive courses, has been using his time in lockdown to create one centered around toilet roll.

Mathieu Carillat, from France, filmed the video which sees toilet paper roll across books, down broom handles and swing across his flat.

The clip starts with just a finger push of the initial toilet roll which sets off the chain reaction across a bookcase and on to the floor.

His latest course, which he designed and recorded while in lockdown, uses toilet rolls. In the video, the paper rolls across the book shelf and down a broom handle

The pink paper is used to keep the momentum going and one displays a ‘STAY HOME’ message as it unravels on the floor before nudging another roll to swing and hit some books.

Several different sizes balls are used in the trick, also known as a rube goldberg, to trigger the next move, including an orange ping pong ball which is released when a fidget spinner rapidly empties a roll of toilet paper.

Sticking to his signature style, dominoes feature towards the end of the course after they are nudged loose by toilet roll being blown away by a standing fan.

The end of the clip sees a heavy metal boules ball roll down a ramp and press down on a soap bottle which pumps out liquid into Mr Carillat’s hands.

Mr Carillat said: ‘As toilet paper has become a meme in this quarantine I thought it would be fun to make a chain reaction with it to spend time.

‘First I had to go out and buy it and be judged by people. But I took the packs one by one every day and there was plenty of it in the store – no shortage because of me.’

The Youtuber said it was difficult to make the chain reaction using toilet roll because its imperfections made it unpredictable.

To create the course he used almost all of the books in his flat and had to continuously tweak it to make sure it worked perfectly.

‘For this machine I was out of my comfort zone. It was a ‘classical’ rube goldberg with a large scale and large objects, not a tiny marble machine,’ he said.

Since it was posted on Wednesday, April 1, it has gained more than 100,000 views.

Kaplamino’s chain reactions usually take months to build but he managed to create this one in just ten days.

He began posting videos on Youtube in 2011 and has since created some impressive courses using dominoes, fidget spinners balloons and matches.
