Police have urged a mother to get medical help after they found a newborn baby dead in canal.

Officers discovered the infant’s body in the Grand Union Canal in Willesden, north west London at 1.19pm this afternoon.

The force has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death.

The body of a newborn baby has been found in the Grand Union Canal near Old Oak Lane in north west London

A cordon remains in place next to the waterway on Old Oak Lane. 

A worker at a canalside restaurant told the Standard: ‘The police and fireman were here but I can’t say anything more.’

In a short statement a Met Police spokesperson said: ‘Cordons are in place at the canal near Old Oak Lane NW10 where the body of a newborn baby was found in the water at 1.19pm.

‘Investigation underway to establish circumstances. We urge the baby’s mother to seek medical assistance via 999.’
