The nightmare continues: Coronation Street’s Yasmeen Nazir is set to find herself in mortal danger in upcoming scenes as her abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe exacts his revenge following their court case

The explosive 60th anniversary scenes kick off on Wednesday 9th December as a bitter Geoff gives his estranged wife the keys to collect her belongings from number 6.

While she is gone, he’s embroiled in a showdown with Alya in The Bistro, resulting in him attacking her and leaving her for dead, before heading to the house after Yasmeen.

Yasmeen is terrified to find her tormentor in the house and is forced to flee upstairs and out a window as a sinister Geoff locks the doors and sets fire to the living room.

Fearing for her life, Yasmeen tries to escape Geoff on the roof as he looms closer, with her desperate cries for help drowned out by the protesters below.

Just as it looks like there’s no escape for Yasmeen, Alya suddenly appears on the roof – will she be able to save her beloved gran and finally end Geoff’s reign of terror?

The dramatic episode, which saw the actors actors, stunt doubles and stunt coordinators self isolate and regularly tested to film close contact scenes, brings to a conclusion a long and dramatic storyline which has left viewers gripped for months.

And speaking in a recent Q&A, actress Shelley admits that whatever happens, the affects of Geoff’s abuse will stay with her character Yasmeen for a long time to come.

She said: ‘I think I’ve been given a great opportunity as an actor because in something like this when you say the tunnel comes to an end it really doesn’t, because this sort of trauma will affect a character, a person for the rest of their lives.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing how or trying to portray how that will affect Yasmeen because I think it would be too simplistic just for her to completely be cured as it were.’

The actress admitted the hard-hitting have taken a toll on her own mental health, praising the support of her partner for helping her unwind after a difficult day of filming.

‘I think it would have been very difficult. And it hasn’t been easy and I’ve been quite grumpy and sometimes I don’t want to talk and I’ve been quite tired because you have to access so many things within your own personality to be true to the people who have shared their story with you,’ she added.

‘So it hasn’t been an easy journey, but I think it’s, from the response that we have. It’s been an extremely rewarding one and yes and thank you to my partner for being so understanding.

‘I think we’ve all grown to trust and become very close together during that time and so I’m very privileged.’

Actor Ian agreed that he’s embraced the opportunity to play such a hated character as Geoff, and hinted that while the verdict will bring an end to this part of the abuse storyline, the long-term effects on Yasmeen are far from over.

He said: ‘We’ve been playing this story now for the best part of two years and, I think it’s pretty much understood that if you play a character like this, if you are a villain or a baddie there is a certain amount of shelf life.

‘So it wasn’t a surprise when we realised that we were coming to some sort of conclusion or some sort of catharsis and for Yasmeen and whatever happens she has to deal with the aftermath of it and I think that’s important to stress and to understand that that is going to be continuing and it needs to continue.’

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
