Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You has reached the number one spot on The Official Big Top 40 chart for the first time.

The singer’s much-loved Christmas classic has reached the top spot on the UK charts 26 years after its release in 1994.

The festive single has also charted earlier than ever before in 2020, first entering The Official Big Top 40 on 22nd November.

All I Want for Christmas Is You has never been at number one before in the UK – it’s highest position on The Official Big Top 40 chart was number six in 2011.

But with the nation kick-starting the festive season early, the hit-single has leaped 18 places in the past week to top the chart.

The song was an instant hit around the world when it was first released but it took many years before it reached number one in some countries.

The single reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2019, making it the song with the longest trip to number one.

All I Want for Christmas Is You is the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist and it is also one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Last week’s number one – Little Mix’s Sweet Melody – has fallen one place to number two with Liam Gallagher’s All You’re Dreaming Of at number three.

It comes after Mariah recently recruited some fellow pop icons to help celebrate her favorite holiday.

The star was joined by Ariana Grance and Jennifer Hudson for an iconic cover of her 2010 Christmas song Oh Santa!, from Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special.

The 50-year-old dropped a music video for the collab midnight on Thursday, as the special premiered on Apple TV+.

Mariah recently told Billboard of the collaboration: ‘Visually, in the special, it really does feel like a girl group moment. I think we all had a good time with it. That was the fun part about it.’

She also dropped a companion soundtrack, available on Apple Music and coming to other streaming platforms December 11.

The special features additional appearances from Snoop Dogg, Tiffany Haddish, Billy Eichner and Jermaine Dupri, as well as Mairah’s twins, son Moroccan and daughter Monroe, both nine.

Tune into The Official Big Top 40, Sundays from 4pm – 7pm, on Capital and Heart Radio.
