One fifth of small and medium-sized firms planning to downsize their offices and encourage remote working

One fifth of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) are planning to downsize their offices and encourage remote working. 

Some 20 per cent plan to occupy less physical space following the pandemic, while 29 per cent plan to let staff work from home, research by Santander found.

However, 81 per cent fear their business will not recover from the impact of Covid-19 until next year at the earliest. 

The survey polled 2,050 bosses at SMEs. 

Santander’s business banking boss Susan Davies said many SMEs had to adapt ‘almost overnight to survive’.
